What is TNR? The Humane Trap-Neuter-Return Protocol Explained

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the evidence-based humane standard for managing feral and community cat colonies. Decades of municipal data prove that lethal eradication creates a vacuum effect, inviting new unfixed cats into the territory.

The TNR Process Step-by-Step

  1. Humane Trapping: Cats are humanely captured using heavy-duty Tru-Catch box traps with bait.
  2. Veterinary Surgery: Licensed veterinarians perform spay/neuter sterilization under full anesthesia.
  3. Rabies & Core Vaccination: Each cat receives a 1-year rabies shot and FVRCP protection.
  4. Universal Ear-Tip: A clean 3/8-inch notch is made on the left ear under anesthesia to identify fixed status.
  5. Recovery & Return: After 24–48 hours of climate-controlled recovery, cats are returned to their home colony territory.
